Did you know. . . It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month, which we know today as the honeymoon.

To receive the best deals on travel, hotel rates, etc., plan your honeymoon at least six to twelve months prior to the wedding.

Take time to plan a memorable honeymoon.

Newlyweds should take care to thoughtfully plan the one opportunity they may have for an incredible vacation prior to beginning a family. Call it once-in-a-lifetime if you will, the truth is, it may be an opportunity they will not be able to repeat until after the children are grown.

HOT TIP:  Don't plan to leave on your honeymoon immediately. The wedding and reception may cause extreme exhaustion. It's a big day. The honeymoon is very special so give yourself a couple of days to rest. Open gifts, sleep late, rest and just be together.

When you are fully rested, go for it! Don't worry about not being able to take a big fancy honeymoon. You have the rest of your lives to make money and take big, wonderful, fabulous vacations. But you only get "one" wedding. Do it well and be happy.

Before you leave on your honeymoon, be sure to have your passport (if needed), drivers license and necessary paperwork with you as you travel. If you are changing your name, make sure that you have the appropriate documents and remember to notify the people who need to know. Also remember to take a copy of your marriage certificate with you.

  • Choose a "Honeymoon Registry"
  • Select a good travel agent
  • Select your destination and decide how long you will be away
  • Remember to request time off from your work
  • Pay deposit
  • Make hotel reservations
  • Make arrangements for transportation
  • Purchase travel insurance
  • Obtain passports and visas, if needed.
  • Go shopping. Purchase something special for your honeymoon wardrobe
  • Check to see if you will need vaccinations
  • Pay balance
  • Pick up tickets and itinerary information from travel agent
  • Pack your suitcases for your honeymoon
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary and where you can be reached with family
  • Leave your cell phone at home. Your honeymoon is a very special get-away for only the two of you
  • Put a "stop delivery" on the newspaper and mail
  • Make arrangements for a trusted friend to feed your pets, water your plants and generally take care of the house
  • Notify your financial institutions of when you will be traveling out of the country on your honeymoon. This could save you the embarrassment of having your credit card rejected because the bank suspects someone else may be using your card.

Plan your honeymoon in Paradise. Search for locations to consider at our recommended online reservation service for honeymoon hideaways, romantic bed & breakfasts, luxury resorts and unique hotels.

Receive the wedding gift you both really want with Traveler's Joy Honeymoon Registry. Their service is similar to a traditional wedding registry, but rather than offering gifts such as housewares and fine china, Traveler's Joy helps you register for the honeymoon of your dreams. They are not a travel agency. You decide when and where to book your honeymoon and they help make it happen. Click here for full details!
