How the Digital Signal Change Can Affect Your Wedding!

Mark Sanchez, Guest Author

Mark Sanchez, DeeJay, Doing his thing!
Mark Sanchez, DJ &
Wedding Entertainment Director
By now everyone knows about TV signals changing to all digital on June 12, 2009. But did you know this also could affect your wedding if a wireless microphone is used during your ceremony? The same microphones that Disc Jockeys, Karaoke Jockeys, bands, etc., use.

New FCC (Federal Communications Commision) regulations on digital signals and microphones will change some things in the wedding business. All wireless microphones that operate between the 698MHz to 806MHz frequencies will be banned.

As of June 12th the frequencies between 698 and 806MHz will be used for "First Responders" only, this means Police, Fire and Government agencies.

What does this mean?

The wireless microphones used in these frequencies after February 17, 2009 will cause interference with First Responders wireless radios. Anyone found using these mics after Feb. 17 can be fined up to $50,000.

Many Disc Jockeys, Karaoke Jockeys and Bands do not know about this law and will continue to use these wireless microphones. Some may know about the law, not take it seriously, and may not replace what seems to be a perfectly good microphone.

What could possibly happen?

Nothing will happen until a First Responder is using there wireless radio in the range of an event where a 698 to 806MHz wireless microphone is being used.

Whether it's a ceremony, reception, corporate event etc. The frequencies will cross and create static, or cancel out, or worse you will also hear everything the First Responders are saying through the entertainers speakers.

This may not go over very well with the clients, particularly with Brides at ceremonies.

The the other side, First Responder radios can cancel out, or they will hear what's being said at the event through the illegal wireless microphones being used. If found, the DJ, Band etc., can be shut down, party over.

This can effect the following:

  • Disc Jockeys
  • Karaoke Jockeys
  • Bands
  • Videographers
  • Venues
  • Ministers
  • Strings
  • or anyone who uses wireless microphones

Attention Brides and Grooms: When you hire a disc jockey or anyone who will be using a wireless microphone during your ceremony or reception be sure that they are aware of this change. If they do not have the proper equipment, hire someone who does.

Professional Mobile Entertainment DJ Service uses the best in audio equiment with newer EV (Electro Voice) and Shure wireless microphones well beyond the 806MHz range for a flawless event every time.
